Poetry Recitation Competition Held
The First
Daffodil Poetry Recitation Competition organized
by the Department of English was held on
August11, 2007 at the DIU auditorium. UGC
Professor Serajul Islam Chaudhury graced the
occasion as Chief Guest. Professor Aminul Islam,
Vice Chancellor of DIU, delivered welcome
speech. Prof. Islam mentioned about the good old
days of his student life in relation with the
importance of cultural activities.
Chief Guest
Prof. Serajul Islam said that it is the duty of
any university to teach aesthetics to its
students and he hailed DIU for arranging such a
wonderful occasion. He also underscored the role
of a university in improving social relation and
cultural harmony. Professor Shahjahan Mina,
Pro-Vice Chancellor in his address said that
cultural activities play a vital role in shaping
the minds of students. Dr. Khondakar Ashraf
Hossain, Professor and Chairman of the
Department of English, University of Dhaka spoke
on the occasion as a Special Guest. He talked
about the reading of a poem for its metrical and
phonetical beauty referring poetry as the most
beautiful expression of human mind. He said, "A
lyric can give a heart the peace which no epic
can offer." On behalf of the jury Pragna Labony
discussed on perfection in recitation and
performance. She also emphasized on practice of
correct pronunciation. Dr. Maniruzzaman,
Professor of English, Jahangirnagar University (JU)
and Mr. Ahmed Reza, Associate Professor, JU,
were the judges in the competition. Twenty-two
participants from different departments took
part in both Bengali and English recitation
competition. Dr. Khondakar Ashraf Hossain and
Mahbub Parvez, Head of BBA Program took part in
recitation. Professor Dr. K. Rezaur Rahman,
Head of the Department of English presented vote
