Professor Aminul Islam was born on 1 st January 1935 at Comilla. He obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry in 1954, M.Sc. in Soil Science in 1955 from Dhaka University and Ph.D. in Soil Science from Michigan State University , USA .

Professional career: Aminul Islam started his professional career as a Lecturer in Soil Science Department, Dhaka University in 1956. He held the positions of Assistant Soil Scientist, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute; Deputy Director, Soil Survey Department, Dhaka : Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor, Department of Soil Science, Dhaka University . He become the Vice-Chancellor of National University in 1996 and continued up to 2000.

Fellowship enjoyed: Fulbright Fellowship by US Government, SEATO Fellowship; and DAAD Fellowship.

Administrative responsibilities: Dr. Islam was the Head of the Department of Soil Science, Dhaka University . 1967-1968, 1969-1970 and 1972-1973 and Chairman, 1973-1976. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Biological Science for eight year: Director, Centre for Advance Research in Biological Science, 1981-1983 and Biotechnology Research Centre, Dhaka University, 1989-1991.

Consultancies: World Bank Consultant in Sri Lanka , 1984; FAO Consultant, 1987; World Bank Consultant, 1988; FAO Consultant, 1993: Local Consultant for Hazra Engineering International, 1984-1985 and SARM Engineering Farm, 1989.

Awards: Dr. Islam was awarded President's Gold Medal 1981. Gold Medal 1986. Gold Medal 1986 jointly by Bangladesh Academy of Science and Third World Academy of Sciences; Independence Day Gold Medal 1990: Comilla Foundation Gold Medal 1992; and Renowned Soil Scientist Award 1993 by Dhaka University Soil Science Ex-Student Association.

Research and publications: Professor Islam supervised/supervising 55 M.Sc., Two M.Phil and 17 Ph.D. students and published 125 research papers so far in national and international journals.

International representation: Dr. Islam participated, presented paper and led delegations at international seminars/symposiums/scientific meetings held in India , Pakistan , Sri Lanka , Hong Kong , Thailand , Malaysia , Chili , New Zealand , North Korea , USA and Canada .

Member of learned societies: Professor Islam is the Life Member of Soil Science Society of Bangladesh; BAAS; Asiatic Society of Bangladesh; and Bangla Academy ; and Member of the International Society of Soil Science. He is one of the Editors of Bangla Academy Bijjan Biswakosh and Banglapedia of Asiatic Society of Bangladesh and Fellow, Bangladesh Academy of Science.

Professor Islam is married and has a daughter and a son. He is now engaged in editorial job.
