Greetings from the Head of the Department of English at Daffodil International University!
The department started its journey back in 2003 with 4 students only but currently we have around one thousand registered students. We have two programs: BA (Hons) in English (four years) and MA in English (one year). The BA program brings together three different but related areas of studies: English Language, Literature and Linguistics while the MA program combines English Literature and Applied Linguistics and ELT in a balanced way.
Freshers and sophomores in the bachelor program are offered skill-based (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) courses that directly help them upgrade their ability in English language use. Students learn English literature through various courses related to different genres and periods. In order to broaden the base of knowledge and application, we offer some specialized courses like Literature in Film and Media, Introduction to Journalism, Introduction to Development Studies, Computer Fundamentals, and Translation Studies.
The students of MA may do their major either in Applied Linguistics & ELT (English Language Teaching) or MA in Literature. MA in Applied Linguistics & ELT prepares the students for teaching service with pedagogical knowledge and practical micro teaching module called Practicum. MA in English Literature equip students with higher literary knowledge, making them confident in literary analysis and criticism. Among other courses, they have “Creative Writing” which creates scope for them to produce their own literary pieces. Through the course “Research Methodology”, offered in both the streams, they learn how to conduct research effectively.
Additionally, English Department regularly organizes various seminars and workshops that directly connect the students to the practical professional world.
We strongly believe, after four plus one year journey with English Department of DIU, a graduate will be able to secure a respectable place in employment as well as the larger sphere of society. Our motto of the department is “Learn English, Earn Success”.
