Environmental Science and Disaster Management

About Us

The Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) was set up at Daffodil International University in 2012. This development in our country is especially important as Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters and environmental pollution because of its geographic location and population expansion. The demand for environmental scientists and those trained in disaster management and pollution control is, therefore, acute and DIU feels strongly that the University must be part of the solution to environmental degradation and ensure sustainable development. We have responded to this by planning a permanent new green campus in Asulia outside Dhaka, a venture that has already won the University several awards for the most environmentally friendly campus in the country. Yet, we also wish to take on the challenge of restoring the degraded ecosystems caused to our environment by training skilled and committed experts who can work with governmental and non-governmental agencies, by researching to provide accurate data to help us survey the extent of the damage and assess different strategies to overcome it, and to champion projects that aim at low-cost, sustainable remedies. Yet, flooding - the environmental disaster most commonly associated with Bangladesh - is only part of the picture. Less well-known is the drought that affects large areas of North Bengal.
